Opening Day - Plant Matter

Bridget May introduces her private painted slide library.

Hypnotized by her cellular structures, predominately plant in this series, we zoom in to encounter illustrative cross sections of stalks and stems. As our fingers traverse the surface of her paintings, our memories activate for what might be mitochondria or capillaries. These plant cells aren't quietly sliced, rather they are topographically built up with their most central nuclei jutting out towards us in minute cones of color.

About the show:
A group of paintings on wood of images inspired by plant tissue, magnified.
About the artist:
My educational background is in art and biology, and I feel equally drawn to both worlds. My paintings are inspired by the intricacies of cellular structures. I start with imagery from microscope slides of plant or animal tissues, and create patterns using intuitive layers of color. I am fascinated by the way colors interact, be it through their hue, value or saturation; the magic of contrast is continuously intriguing. When viewing reality through a microscope, previously unseen mesmerizing patterns of life become visible and the latent becomes possible. To borrow a lovely notion from Theodor Geisel (aka Dr. Seuss), there is the potential for an entire universe in every drop of water, every speck of dust.
